The nearby historical sites are within easy reach and include the picturesque fishing village of Barfleur, St Vaast la Hougue and the island of Tatihou, the D-day landing beaches (approx 22 km from Utah Beach), Bayeux and its famous tapestry, and further a field, beautiful Mont St Michel. Not to miss, the Cité de la Mer showing the many facets of underwater exploration with human adventure as its main theme. It includes the "Redoutable", a former French Navy submarine, now a museum and the largest submarine in the world open to the public. Bayeux. 75 km. Attractive town with well-preserved medieval centre and a renowned cathedral. Also famous for its tapestry depicting the story of the conquest of England and King Harold by the Norman William the Conqueror, in the Battle of Hastings. D-Day landings memorial museum. Caen. 100 km. Although almost completely destroyed in 1944 during WWII, Caen boasts an attractive historic centre. With beautiful abbeys and ramparts, excellent museums and lively pedestrian streets with good shops, it is well-worth a visit. HOW TO GET THERE: Low cost flights from UK to Rennes (2 hr 30mn).
